This materials kit includes handwoven cotton blanket that can be used as a blank canvas for SO many wonderful applications.
We’re partnered with a family in India to bring handwoven cotton blankets from rural and semi-rural villages to makers. The blankets are sourced from 40+ villages, each is woven using newly harvested cotton which was handspun using a traditional Indian spinning wheel. Lining two edges of the blanket are individually hand-rolled and hand-knotted fringes, no two edgings (or blankets) are quite the same. Cotton is a natural, sustainable resource and we are looking forward to exploring more with it with various techniques.
These lightweight blankets are frequently used in Indian culture to line the foot of a bed, to use for lounging (and picnicking) outdoors, and to simply drape on home furniture to add a cozy layer on chilly nights. Their story and their travel to the US for this project is inspiring! The family we’ve collaborated with is individually collecting and sorting this set of handwoven blankets for us so that they can travel safely from villages to the US. Pari, our new friend and collaborator, oversees the transport of these blankets from individual makers in rural and semi-rural villages along dirt roads to large cities where travel can ultimately be made to the US. We are honored to celebrate makers FULL CIRCLE from the raw materials to the finished handmade project.
