Pibione Tapestry Weaving | Lindsey Campbell

LINDSEY CAMPBELL
PIBIONE TAPESTRY WEAVING

Welcome to our workshop exploring the beautiful art of Pibione tapestry weaving. Weaving is an ancient craft that has been practiced since the beginning of time and throughout the world, Pibione is a unique style of weaving that literally means ‘grapes’ in Italian and refers to the small bumps within the tapestry that create a pattern. Known for its detail and craftsmanship, Pibione is practiced on the small island of Sardinia in Italy by a handful of artists that are keeping the original designs and looms alive.

In this workshop, artist Lindsey Campbell introduces Pibione and the uniquely sourced materials that make her wall hangings and art so special. Lindsey uses this technique often in her own work, modernizing the ancient practice with extra chunky materials for a bold, graphic design. Although this project requires a bit of time (and a lot of concentration), once you get the hang of it, the technique is repetitive and meditative - by the end you will have a gorgeous piece of artwork to hang in your home! We’ve worked carefully with artisanal craftsmen, wool mills and natural dyers to assemble a kit of tools & materials to get you started.

Lindsey is the artist and instructor behind Hello Hydrangea. She has taught thousands of students how to weave through her own courses and has published a book, Welcome to Weaving, to introduce even more makers to the art. Lindsey has designed collections for Anthropologie, Nordstrom and Joann’s Crafts. She is an advocate for helping busy people use their limited time to be creative.

This workshop includes:

  • a detailed, digital workshop to build a woven tapestry led by Lindsey Campbell
  • a month-end live Maker Chat Q&A to answer all of your wonderful questions in a community environment

The tools & materials included in this kit:

  • a custom 18x24” large maple loom + sword or ‘pick up’ stick (made in studio San Diego, Ca craftsman Jeff Kirschenman)
  • a skein of South African merino wool (+ recycled water bottle)  extra bulky yarn milled in collaboration with Love Fest Fibers
  • a skein of hand dyed indigo fingering yarn
  • a skein of cotton warp string
  • two dowels: a small Pibione dowel and a dowel for wall hanging
  • 100% cotton 3 ply rope

We can’t wait to see how you are inspired to create using this new technique! Be sure to share with us by tagging @hellohydrangea and using #thecraftersbox. Happy making with this special workshop.
